Using just simple black ink and carefully curated white space, sumi-e captures the timeless beauty and complexity of the natural world. Early sumi-e paintings, when paired together with calligraphy, were viewed as poetry, often being considered visual haiku. Discover the basic methods to Japanese Sumi-e painting, building up your skills progressively over the initial three weeks of the course before having the opportunity to put your new skills into practice during the final (fourth) week of the course, making a polished artwork of your own as a souvenir. About Your InstructorKigoshi Sensei was born in Gujo Hatchiman, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. As well as completing formal schooling, she studied art from the age of ten and later attended university where she gained a degree in home economics before leaving Japan at the age of twenty-one.Kigoshi Sensei is a member of the International Sumi-E Association based in Japan and she has been studying Sumi-E for over 18 years. She is also a master practitioner of Shodo with over 20 years experience. Kigoshi Sensei also undertakes private commissions from clients seeking a unique piece of artwork to compliment their home or office décor.
