Origami (折り紙)

Origami is one of Japan's best-known cultural activities, is the art of paper folding to create a variety of shapes including flowers, animals and people. The goal is to transform a flat square sheet of paper into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Modern origami practitioners generally discourage the use of cuts, glue, or markings on the paper. Though an ancient Japanese art form rooted in tradition, it has overtime evolved into an equally modern handicraft that has influenced current-day technology and science. Japanese children learn origami in kindergarten or primary school to improve their focusing skills and adults often engage in origami for fun as an activity to keep their brains sharp.
