The Japanese characters 太鼓 (taiko) translates directly to, "big fat drum,"  and it is a form of traditional Japanese music and art that combines powerful beats with dynamic movements. Part of Japanese culture for over 1,000 years, it has now spread all around the world and captured many people's hearts with its lively, loud, and energetic performances.

Learn the technical basics of taiko and sample a few specific playing styles.

Taiko playing is a musical activity that is challenging and fun, and offers wonderful benefits like reducing stress, aiding relaxation and inviting personal expression. Prior musical training is not a requirement. You will be introduced to the background of Taiko & the basics of how to play, followed by a short demonstration before undertaking the opportunity to participate in a group performance together.

Play Taiko will leave you with a unique group experience that will energise, stimulate and excite. Taiko playing requires great energy and teamwork, as well as total integration of one’s mind, body and spirit; the rhythm of the taiko pulsates through your body – its expression is primal and earthy. Taiko playing is also great exercise. It is a musical activity that is challenging and fun, and offers wonderful benefits like reducing stress, aiding relaxation and inviting personal expression.

This workshop has been created so all members of your family (8+ years) can experience the joy of playing taiko together. Parents and children; grandparents and grandkids; aunties, uncles and nieces, nephews – everyone are welcome!

About Your Instructors

In 2016, Co-founders Ian and Riley were individually awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation for a contribution towards promoting friendship and goodwill between Australia and Japan. Since 1997 the group has an international reputation for vibrant performances that couple explosive energy and extreme dynamism with refinement and grace. Performing on the stages of Australia's concert halls, as well as having performed in leading theatres and concert halls worldwide including in Japan, Paris, Bangkok, Taiwan, Abu Dhabi. In the USA they were the headline appearance in the Taiko Nation concerts at the 2014 World Taiko Gathering in Los Angeles.
